What's the Best Pomodoro Length for Studying?
25, 45 or 90 minutes — matching block length to subject, exam pressure and your attention span.
There's no universal number. Block length should match how long the material takes to load into working memory.
By subject type Memorisation — vocabulary, anatomy, formulae: 20-25 minutes. Recall decays with fatigue and frequent breaks improve retention through the spacing effect. Problem sets — maths, physics, engineering: 45-50 minutes. Multi-step problems break badly at the 25-minute mark. Essays and reading: 50-90 minutes. Argument-building needs sustained context.
Build up, don't start long If you currently focus for 15 minutes, a 90-minute block will fail. Start at your honest current limit, then add 5 minutes each week.
Break length by block 25-minute block: 5-minute break. 50-minute block: 10 minutes. 90-minute block: 20-30 minutes, ideally including food or a walk.
The exam-conditions exception In the final fortnight before an exam, train in blocks that match the paper's length. If the exam is three hours, you need to have practised sustaining two to three hours, or the format itself becomes the obstacle.
Track, then decide Log how many blocks you complete before quality drops. Most students find a hard ceiling at four to six deep blocks per day; beyond that, extra hours produce re-reading, not learning.
