km/h to mph: Conversion Table for Speed Limits and Running Pace
Divide km/h by 1.609. Includes every common speed limit converted and a running pace comparison.
One mile is 1.609344 kilometres, so the speed conversion uses the same factor.
The formula mph = km/h ÷ 1.609344 km/h = mph × 1.609344
Mental shortcut Multiply km/h by 6 and drop the last digit. 100 km/h → 600 → 60 mph. The true value is 62.1 mph, so it's a slight underestimate — safe for speed limits.
Speed limits 30 km/h = 18.6 mph. 50 km/h = 31.1 mph. 60 km/h = 37.3 mph. 80 km/h = 49.7 mph. 100 km/h = 62.1 mph. 120 km/h = 74.6 mph. 130 km/h = 80.8 mph.
Running and cycling 10 km/h = 6.2 mph, a 6:00/km or 9:39/mile pace. 12 km/h = 7.5 mph, 5:00/km. 16 km/h = 9.9 mph, a fast club-run pace. Casual cycling sits near 20 km/h (12.4 mph); a road cyclist cruising is around 30 km/h (18.6 mph).
Remember that hire cars in the UK and US show mph, while everywhere else in Europe shows km/h — the numeric limit looks lower in mph, which is where visitors most often get caught.
