Square Feet to Square Meters: Formula and Room-Size Examples

Multiply square feet by 0.092903. A practical guide for property listings, flooring and rent comparisons.

Area conversion trips people up because the factor is squared. One foot is 0.3048 m, so one square foot is 0.3048², or 0.092903 m².

The formula square metres = square feet × 0.092903 square feet = square metres × 10.7639

Fast mental maths Divide square feet by 10 and add about 8%. 1,000 sq ft → 100, plus 8% → 93 m². The true answer is 92.9 m².

Reference sizes 100 sq ft = 9.3 m² — a small bedroom. 400 sq ft = 37.2 m² — a studio flat. 800 sq ft = 74.3 m² — a one-bedroom. 1,500 sq ft = 139.4 m² — a three-bedroom house. 2,500 sq ft = 232.3 m².

Practical warnings Property listings differ on whether balconies, stairwells and wall thickness count, so a 5-10% discrepancy between two listings for the same flat is normal. When buying flooring, convert first, then add 10% for cuts and waste — 15% for diagonal or herringbone layouts.
