Best Time to Visit the United States: Weather by Region

Build a domestic trip around the weather in the Southwest, California, the Northeast and national parks instead of a single national season.

There is no single best time to visit the United States. California’s coast, the desert Southwest, mountain parks and the Northeast can have very different weather on the same day. Start with the experiences you want, then choose a route and dates that suit each stop.

Desert Southwest

Long outdoor days in places such as Las Vegas, Zion and the Grand Canyon depend on temperature, sun exposure and park-specific conditions. Compare monthly highs and lows for your exact stops. Carry more water than a comfortable city day might suggest, and follow park alerts for trails and access.

California coast and mountains

San Francisco, Los Angeles, Yosemite and Lake Tahoe should not share one packing assumption. Elevation and coastal influence can change your morning low dramatically. Check each city or park page separately and choose layers for the coldest stop.

Northeast and seasonal trips

New York and nearby regions have distinct hot, cold and transitional periods. If you want walking days, compare historical wet days and temperature before choosing dates, then reserve room for indoor alternatives on the itinerary.

Compare, then plan

Browse states under United States destinations, open each stop’s best-time page and compare the monthly observations. Use the multi-stop planner for your route, then revisit the live forecast near departure to assign outdoor activities. Historical climate data is not a forecast; official road and park information takes priority.
