Weather Forecast vs Climate History: What Can You Trust?

A forecast predicts specific upcoming days. Climate history describes what happened on comparable dates in past years. Both are useful for travel, but they answer different questions.

For trips far away, start with history

If your departure is months away, no daily forecast can tell you what will happen on a particular afternoon. Use the twelve-month best-time view and the confidence explorer to compare the usual temperature range and frequency of dry days. The charts show how many years and observations were used. Historical, not a forecast.

For trips soon, use the forecast

The city weather page shows upcoming conditions over the coming days. Look at daily highs, lows and rain chances, then use the trip planner to schedule flexible activities. Forecasts can change; a rain icon for one afternoon should not decide an entire holiday months in advance.

What a confidence score means

A weather confidence score summarizes how consistently the historical record has matched the conditions you want around your selected dates. It does not measure the probability that next year's holiday will have perfect weather. Look at the underlying temperature band and dry-day chart as well as the headline score.

Work with uncertainty

If an outdoor experience is the point of the trip, favor a place and season with a wider window of suitable days. Keep a weather-independent activity in your plan and recheck the forecast as departure approaches. This is more useful than treating any single percentage as a guarantee.
